Sathya was almost aborted—just because she’s a girl

Sathya* was born to an impoverished family. Her family only had enough work to last half the year, and even worse—they don’t value their daughters. After the birth of Sathya’s older sister, her mother was pressured to have a son. She avoided the medical camps that our social workers had set up, and when her mother pressured her to have an ultrasound and abort the baby if it was a girl, she almost gave in. Ultimately, she was too afraid to follow through with the abortion and gave birth to Sathya.

Upon hearing the news of the gender, Sathya’s grandmother broke down and her father left his wife and newborn daughter alone in their house for two days. Our social workers had to call the police and ask them to protect Sathya and her mother. They were required to publicly commit to the police and their community that they would accept Sathya and treat her and her mother well.

In the months since the authorities got involved, things have gotten better in Sathya’s house. Her father has started to connect with her, and she receives milk, food, and regular check-ups from our social workers. As you can see, she is growing rapidly into a toddler!

Donating to KRF means that Sathya and infants just like her will continue to receive nutritious food, vitamins, and medical care! With your help, we will be able to advocate for the lives of more infants like Sathya.
