Like many other families in India, Romila’s* parents only have daily farm work on a seasonal basis. So for about half the year, they have no daily income. For the rest of the year, money is tight and food is scarce.
We consistently see that the daughters bear the burden of poverty to a greater extent than other family members. They’re the last to receive food, education, and medical care when resources are few.
Romila’s parents wanted to stop educating her to save money. But Romila fought for her place in school and fought against being married off to an older man.
With the help of our donors funding her education, Romila can now tell her parents with confidence that she’ll be able to get a job and care for herself. She doesn’t need a husband to provide for her—because education helps women rise.
