Nagasri* grew up in extreme poverty. Her father’s heart and kidney problems meant that he couldn’t work, and her mother’s income amounted to 160 INR a day. Their family struggled to pay medical bills and put food on the table.
Nagasri’s mother decided that the best way to save money was to pull Nagasri out of school so that the cost of her tuition would no longer burden the family. Most parents in their village feel the same way about their daughters: they’ll one day be going to live with their in-laws, so why educate and invest in them?
At KRF, we believe that all girls deserve education. So when we met Nagasri and learned about her desire to go to school, we counseled her family on the value that girls hold and why educating their daughter would actually help their family, not harm it!
Because we were able to intervene on her behalf, Nagasri is now in school—for good. She wants to be a doctor one day. She receives three healthy meals every day and is learning about her inherent value as a girl.
